Born from a Need

Slow By Nature Apparel began with a simple search: for clothing that could keep up with a life lived close to the land.

We wanted clothes made for real work and real movement — for bending, kneeling, carrying, gathering, growing and making. Clothes with pockets where you actually need them. Fabrics that breathe and feel good against the skin. Garments strong enough to work in, comfortable enough to live in, and beautiful enough to wear long after the day's work is done.

What we were looking for proved surprisingly difficult to find.

Women's workwear too often asks us to choose: practical or beautiful, hard-wearing or comfortable, functional or feminine. We began to wonder why we should have to choose at all.

And so, Slow By Nature Apparel began.

Rooted in the rhythms of farm life and inspired by women who work with their hands, our clothing is being thoughtfully designed around the way women actually move, work and live.

We aren't interested in creating clothes simply because the world needs something new.

We want to create the pieces we couldn't find — and make them well.

Designed for Women Who Do

For the growers, gatherers, makers and doers.

Slow By Nature Apparel is designed around women in motion — women who work with their hands, get their knees dirty, carry more than they probably should, and need their clothes to work just as hard as they do. Wherever your work takes you, we believe practical clothing should never ask you to sacrifice comfort, beauty or a sense of yourself.

  • GROW

For hands in the soil and days spent outdoors.

  • MAKE

For creating, building, fixing and working with your hands.

  • GATHER

For baskets filled, pockets used and things brought home.

  • LIVE

For everything that happens in between.

Clothes designed around the life you're living — not the other way around.

The garment that started it all

The Gatherer

It started with a pair of dungarees.

Not just any dungarees, but a pair designed specifically for women who work, grow, gather and move through their days with purpose.

The Gatherer is the founding garment of Slow By Nature Apparel — born on the farm and designed from the ground up around the realities of a life lived outdoors. Every detail is being considered with purpose: where a pocket sits, how the body moves when you bend and kneel, where fabric needs reinforcement, how the garment adjusts to different bodies, and what might make a long day of work just a little more comfortable.

Crafted from a considered blend of hemp and cotton and developed together with skilled South African makers, The Gatherer brings together natural fibres, practical construction and thoughtful design.

It is workwear, certainly.

But it is also something to live in.

Something to pull on in the morning without thinking twice. Something that gathers the marks and memories of the work you've done in it. Something that becomes more yours with every wear.

The Gatherer is still being made. And we're taking our time to get it right.

From Fibre to Garment

Every garment begins long before the first stitch is sewn.

From the fibres we choose to the hands that shape them, we believe every part of the making matters. Slow By Nature Apparel is built around natural materials, skilled South African workmanship and thoughtful design — considered from beginning to end.

  • Natural Fibres

We begin with the fabric. Hemp and cotton have been chosen for their strength, breathability, comfort and beautiful natural character — materials designed to be worn, worked in and lived in.

Rather than chasing novelty, we are choosing fibres that make sense for the garments we want to create and the lives they are designed to accompany.

  • South African Hands

A garment is only as good as the hands and knowledge behind it.

Slow By Nature Apparel is being developed alongside skilled South African textile specialists, pattern makers and garment manufacturers whose experience and craftsmanship are helping transform an idea born on the farm into something made to last.

  • Thoughtfully Made

Every detail should earn its place.

From pockets and fastenings to reinforcement, fit and fabric, our garments are designed with purpose. We favour considered production, useful details and clothing intended to be worn often, worked hard and kept for a long time.

Slow By Nature was born in South Africa, and we believe that where possible, the value created by our clothing should remain here too.

That means looking close to home first — working with South African textile specialists, product developers, pattern makers, machinists and manufacturers, and drawing on the extraordinary skills and experience that already exist within our local clothing and textile industry.

For us, local manufacturing is about more than a label sewn into a garment. It is about knowing the people behind what we make. Building relationships. Valuing craftsmanship. Supporting businesses, skills and livelihoods within our own economy.

From the hemp and cotton fabrics supplied by Green Route Hemp Industries to the development and making of our garments alongside Cross Grain Studios and The Joburg CMT, The Gatherer is taking shape through collaboration.

We may not always be able to source every component locally, but when there is a good South African option, we will always look here first.

Because we believe in making clothing that belongs to this place — designed here, developed here and made by South African hands.

Something Is Taking Shape

1 of 3

Slow By Nature Apparel is still in the making — and we think that part of the story is worth sharing.

Right now, fabrics are being tested, colours developed, hardware gathered and patterns prepared. Soon there will be a first sample. Then it will come home to the farm, where it will be worn, worked in, washed, tested, adjusted and worn again.

There will undoubtedly be things we change along the way.

That's part of making something properly.

We're not rushing towards a launch date simply for the sake of having something to sell. We're taking the time to ask questions, solve problems, learn from our makers and pay attention to the little details that can turn a good garment into one you'll reach for again and again.

So, while The Gatherer takes shape, we're opening the workshop door and inviting you to follow along.

This is where the story begins.
