An Unexpected Love Affair

Some of the most beautiful things in life begin quite by accident.

When I first arrived at our little piece of paradise in the Magaliesburg Valley, I knew very little about dahlias. Other than the fact that they were beautiful flowers, of course.

But the farm had a surprise waiting for me.

As the seasons unfolded, dahlias began appearing in the most unexpected places. Splashes of colour emerging from the earth, quietly announcing themselves amongst the greenery. Some were bold and flamboyant, others delicate and understated, but every single one was a little wonder.

Naturally, I fell in love.

When their flowering season came to an end, I discovered that their tubers could be lifted, divided and multiplied. Well, that sounded simple enough!

What followed was a rather ridiculous adventure involving countless hours of digging, dividing, washing and storing tubers, several sore fingers, an alarming number of plastic crates, and enough vermiculite to make the local agricultural co-op wonder what on earth I was up to.

And somewhere along the way, a little fascination became a full-blown obsession.

One dahlia became ten. Ten became dozens. New varieties were discovered, ordered and eagerly awaited. Before long, I found myself planning an entire field dedicated to these extraordinary flowers.

And so, quite unexpectedly, the Slow By Nature dahlia farm was born.

But for me, growing flowers is about so much more than producing beautiful blooms.

It's about getting my hands into the soil, working with the rhythms of nature, celebrating the changing seasons, and finding joy in the simplest things. It's about creating something beautiful and sharing it with others.

And that is where you come in.

My dream is to share our flowers with florists and event stylists who appreciate locally grown beauty, with flower lovers who enjoy a freshly picked bunch on their kitchen table, and with visitors who would love nothing more than to wander through a field of dahlias and pick their own.

The Slow By Nature Dahlia Club is your invitation to become part of this journey.

Join us for seasonal harvest updates, beautiful blooms, behind-the-scenes stories and invitations to our pick-your-own flower days.

Our flower field is still growing, and there is so much beauty yet to come.

I can't wait to share it with you.

With love, from my little corner of the Magaliesburg Valley.

Grown slowly. Picked with love. Shared with joy.

The Blooms That Started It All

Long before there were plans for a flower field, a growing collection of treasured varieties, or dreams of sharing our blooms with the world, there were just four dahlias growing quietly here on the farm.

They asked for nothing, yet inspired everything.

These are the original beauties that sparked an unexpected love affair, countless hours of learning, and a dream that continues to blossom.

Every flower farm has a beginning. This is ours.

Meet The Newcommers

What began with four humble dahlias, has blossomed into something rather extraordinary.

One variety became two, two became ten, and before long, an innocent fascination had turned into a full-blown love affair. From delicate pastels and romantic blushes to bold, dramatic blooms bursting with personality, each newcomer brings something special to our growing collection.

Some were carefully chosen. Others were simply impossible to resist. And every single one has a story waiting to unfold.

Meet the newest members of our flower family. We can't wait to see them bloom!

Important Note: The photographs displayed are illustrative references based on the cultivar names and descriptions provided by our suppliers. They are intended to give you an impression of each variety, but actual blooms may differ in colour, shape and appearance.

As our dahlias begin to flower, we'll gradually replace these reference images with photographs of the beautiful blooms grown right here at Slow By Nature.

Until then, consider this a little preview of the beauty to come!

The Best Things in Life Take Time

Like everything we do at Slow By Nature, our dahlias are grown with patience, care, and a deep appreciation for the rhythms of nature.

We believe in muddy hands, sunshine on our faces, the anticipation of that first flower bud, and the simple joy of watching something beautiful unfold.

Our flower fields are still growing, and this is only the beginning of our story.

Thank you for being part of it.

With love, from our little corner of the Magaliesburg Valley.
